California: State of Nature

Surprising Connections

Objective

Design an original logo for a long-standing exhibit that represents the exhibit itself as well as the California Academy of Sciences. Create a wordmark that conveys the tone of the exhibit, is on brand, and works on numerous deliverables handled both in-house and out. Use out-house illustrations to create printed signage that promotes the exhibit, along with motion graphics to be shown in the museum lobby. Create stickers to be displayed throughout the exhibit, which will also be available for purchase, allowing visitors to take a piece of the exhibit home.

Approach

California’s unique and extraordinary ecosystems are home to vast networks of interconnected species. This exhibition explores the connections between plants, animals, and people—through the lenses of biodiversity and regeneration. The exhibition highlights how individuals can aid in restoring these vital connections, inviting collaboration with Academy scientists and community partners dedicated to regenerating biodiversity and protecting ecosystems.

The message of connection follows through into the logo by connecting each word together. The connection between the words works as a visualization of nature in a tree, growing upwards in a positive direction, and as an arrow for directional wayfinding on signage. A timeless design guarantees longevity, while a bold design emphasizes the significance of regeneration.
