Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works is a book by graphic designer Erik Spiekermann published in 1993. It is a classic guide to typography. In the trailer, simple and clean motion graphics are used to convey the information that can be acquired from the book. The tone is informational and the music keeps the video upbeat.

Not Bound By Convention

Objective

Apply motion graphics to an existing logo that is currently non-animated.

Approach

Patagonia is an American outdoor clothing company founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973. The logo utilizes the outline of Mount Fitz Roy in the region of Patagonia. In the animation, The sun rises and sky changes seasons to convey long-lasting durability of the brand.

Clerks

I Assure You We're Open!

Objective

Create a new title sequence for an existing film that is stylistically different than the existing title sequence from the original film. Translate the feelings and characters into typography, visual metaphor, and symbol.

Approach

Clerks is a black and white American independent comedy film by Kevin Smith released in 1994. It presents a day in the lives of titular store clerks Dante Hicks and Randal Graves, along with their acquaintances. Just because they serve you doesn’t mean they like you.

The animation uses simple line reveal to show various scenes from the movie. Color and music identify the tone of the film.

Objective

Animate a quote. Emphasis on typography.   

Approach

Type choice relates to tactility of the quote. Motion graphics communicate and emphasize meaning of each word.
